Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation

Scale was recently invited to complete a submission for Fugitive Structures, an annual competition run by the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. Our scheme, titled field void, carves a geometric spiral out of a dense field of transparent tubes. Inside this field, one discovers a captured circular void. This is a room with no ceiling, only sky.

The transparent tubes are hung from a black ceiling. The underside of the tubes read as a single surface. Variable rod lengths create an ‘inverse topography’. Determined by a digitally modelled surface, the rods are computer cut, coded and marked, allowing their precise location in space.
