The Gipps Street Terrace is now complete! The project is a contemporary renovation of a modest two-storey terrace house in inner Sydney.

The project is nearing completion with the installation of the stair and external detailed steel work.

All brickwork, steel reveals and roofing is complete – interior topping slab to be poured this week.

A 2 storey free-standing house in North Bondi, the diagonal roof ridge creates a different facade for each orientation, while responding to the suburban context of pitched roofs.

Brickwork is being completed this week. White 50mm high La Paloma face bricks have been used throughout the project.

Sitting atop the headland at North Bondi, this 2 storey house frames views to the Pacific to the east, and to Bondi Beach to the west.

We are also very excited to see it shortlisted for the 2016 Houses Awards. The project has been included in Alterations and Additions Under 200m².

The house was infested with termites. Water cascaded through the broken roof and the carpet was rotting. But none of it bothered Matt Chan.

He saw the potential of this “hidden masterpiece in the suburbs”. “I only saw the good when I walked in,” he said.

Chan had access to a wealth of resources when restoring the house: a model at the Powerhouse Museum, the original plans stored at the State Library, and the advice of the man who designed it – Australia’s greatest living architect, Glenn Murcutt.

Murcutt and Chan graduated from the University of NSW 34 years apart. The Ockens House project features in a new exhibition celebrating 60 years of graduate excellence at UNSW, where Murcutt is the Seidler chair in the practice of architecture.

Architecture by Hand and Mind showcases rarely seen sketches and models by some of Australia’s foremost architects. It officially opens on Wednesday.

Justin Cawley studied architecture at the University of Sydney, where he graduated with first class honours in 2010 and a Masters of Architecture in 2013. He comes to SCALE after working with Bates Smart since 2010. Recently, Justin was one of three designers in residence at the Australian Design Centre, where he formulated new gallery designs that respond to the challenges facing natural history museums today.
