Matthew Chan has been awarded the 2011 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship. He will take part in an exchange program in the Architecture Foundation Exchange Program in London from October 17 – October 21 2011. The scholarship is a joint venture of the NSW Architects Registration Board and the Architecture Foundation UK. Hannah Tribe and Andrew Burns also received the award.

Q&A(rchitect) with Matthew Chan
Winner of the 2011 NSW Emerging Architect Prize Matthew Chan, of Scale Architecture, will give a presentation tomorrow night at Surry HIlls Library. He will talk about his career progression, mentors and contribution to the professional community. The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session, where fellow emerging architects, students and graduates are free to ask the difficult questions, with a focus on mentoring and teaching.

The evening will be hosted by Janne Ryan, an ideas curator and executive producer of the recent TEDxSydney event.

Alongside other practitioners, Matthew Chan will be delivering a public lecture on the 21st of September at The Institute of Architects.

Scale Architecture has received a commendation at the NSW Architecture Awards for their Australia Street Infants School Covered Outdoor Learning Area.

Our state schools are often forced to resort to ‘off-the-shelf’ demountables to procure their small buildings. However, the principal of Australia Street Infants School was determined to go down a different route to realise a multipurpose building that could not be found in the Bunnings catalogue. The architects have worked together with the school principal (also the client) and the school community as a whole to achieve this building. It was an extremely ambitious project with a small budget that required a great deal of political prowess to see it through to a successful completion. Yet these limitations did not hamper the vision to build something that is distinctive, architecturally detailed and far beyond a standard covered outdoor learning area.

The Laneways by George! winning entry – Infinity Forest is the result of an international collaboration between Isabel Cordeiro(NL), Katie Hepworth of Transit Lounge and Matt Chan of Scale Architecture. Infinity Forest is where you find yourself in a brief moment of concentrated nature – an oasis contained by a small reflective room placed precariously in the laneways of Sydney.
